Scary things create good story lines and ideas because it keeps the audience on edge and keeps them curious for what is going to happen. Even though they are probably getting scared, they really want to know what's going to happen. Also some people just enjoy getting scared because they like the adrenaline. Also a scary theme can go so many ways and can have lots of story lines which is why they are so popular.
